Motorola vs. BlackBerry: Will Innovation Make the Sale?

Will patents be the key to a successful sale of Motorola’s handset division?

Motorola is seeking strategic options for the unit — which hasn’t recaptured the glory of its RAZR days — not a battery of legal maneuvering against Research in Motion, the maker of the dominant BlackBerry smartphone that has arguably played a huge role in hurting Motorola’s market share (and, probably, everyone else’s).

Motorola has waged battle against RIM over technology that allows devices to communicate through Wi-Fi as well as cellular services.

Motorola just installed a new chief financial officer, Paul Liska, with close ties to private equity. Liska was an “industrial partner” for MidOcean Partners, CVC Capital Holdings and Ripplewood Holdings LLC, which means that the PE firms often installed Liska to help run their companies.

AT&T unveils $99.99 unlimited calling plan: This may work out great for iphone users

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc (T.N), the biggest U.S. mobile service, said on Tuesday it would offer unlimited mobile phone calls for a flat rate of $99.99 a month, hours after Verizon Wireless announced a similar plan.

AT&T said the new fee option would be available on February 22 and that existing customers could sign up without having to extend their service contract.

Verizon Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. mobile service is a venture of Verizon Communications (VZ.N) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD.L).

Broadband For Cell Phones Getting Better and Better

San Francisco - The first generation of High Speed Packet Access mobile services increased download speeds to mobile phones. Now carriers are also launching HSPA services, also known as Turbo-3G, with faster upload speeds, making the mobile office even more of a reality.

On Thursday, AT&T Wireless unveiled two new LaptopConnected HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access) data cards for its wireless broadband customers.

Another carrier that has upgraded its network and recently launched a service is 3 Sweden.

"We are mainly talking to professional users. It's a really good service for people that need to send large files," said Camilla Bülow.

It charges a flat monthly fee of 299 Swedish kronor ($46) for the service, aptly named Pro.

AT&T Wireless and 3 Sweden are not the only operators speeding up their networks. Around 50 carriers currently support HSUPA, according to the latest figures from GSM Association, a group representing network operators.

Good News for Consumers in the United States: 3 cell carriers in price battle

NEW YORK - Verizon Wireless introduced an unlimited calling plan $99.99 a month on Tuesday, a move that was quickly matched by AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA and weighed down stock prices for all U.S. mobile carriers.

Verizon Wireless was apparently the first major carrier to make an "unlimited" plan available nationwide with no domestic roaming or long-distance fees. Its announcement was all but five hours old when AT&T announced its own unlimited plan.

"This is a highly competitive market and we're committed to moving fast to meet customer needs," said Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T Mobility.

Sony to spend $200 mln on advanced panel technology

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese consumer electronics maker Sony Corp (6758.T) said on Tuesday it will spend 22 billion yen ($203.5 million) to develop technology to make medium to large organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels.

Sony launched the world's first TV using such panels in November at a price of 200,000 yen.

OLED displays use organic, or carbon-containing, compounds that emit light when electricity is applied. Unlike liquid crystal display panels they do not need backlighting, making OLED TVs slimmer and more energy-efficient.

Just 3 mm thick, the new TV consumes 40 percent less power than a comparable LCD set and is suitable for watching fast-moving images such as sports programs because of its quick response time. It also offers bright colors and a wide viewing angle.

Phone viruses to spread as telecom, computer worlds merge, say experts

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - Viruses and hacking on mobile phones are still rare but attacks are a looming danger as increasing numbers of people access the Internet and download files with their handsets, experts say.

A survey released this week at the industry's Mobile World Congress showed that only 2.1 percent of people had been struck by a virus themselves and only 11.6 percent knew someone who had been affected by one.

The poll by IT security specialist McAfee, based on 2,000 people in Britain, the United States and Japan, showed that 86.3 percent had had no experience of mobile phone viruses.

The survey did suggest however that the more developed the mobile market is, with high use of the Internet and downloads, the more likely people were to be hit by bugs.

(RIM) Research In Motion and Motorola duel in lawsuits -The Case is over Patent Infringements

MONTREAL (Reuters) - BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM.TO) and rival Motorola (MOT.N) have sued each other over what they say are patent infringements for technology used in their mobile phones.

RIM alleges that Motorola is infringing on the Canadian company's patents and demanding "exorbitant" licensing fees, according to court documents.

The civil action, filed on Friday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, alleges that Motorola infringed on a number of patents held by RIM.

In addition, RIM alleges that Motorola "is demanding exorbitant royalties...for patents that Motorola claims are essential to various standards for mobile wireless telecommunications and wireless computing that RIM practices."

Just in time for Valentines Day: How deep is your love? Korean passion phones know

SEOUL (Reuters) - Valentines Day in South Korea means chocolates, romantic dinners and a high-tech mobile phone device that can secretly check the passion in the voice of a lover.

The "Love Detector" service from mobile operator KTF uses technology that is supposed to analyze voice patterns to see if a lover is speaking honestly and with affection.

"We created this service because we thought people would want to know what others were feeling about them," said Ahn Hee-jung, a KTF official.

Users who speak by pointing their mobile phones at themselves for video conferences can see a "love meter" bar on the screen of their handset during a conversation.

RIM reports "critical" BlackBerry outage: This is why i feel Unlocked Cell Phones are better

TORONTO (Reuters) - A major outage hit BlackBerry users in North America on Monday, cutting off wireless e-mail for everyone from busy executives to political campaign staff on the eve of three U.S. presidential primaries.

The problem, which BlackBerry owner Research In Motion described as a "critical severity outage" affecting users in the Americas, once again raised concerns about the stability of the e-mail service 10 months after a widespread crash last April.

RIM said in a later statement that data services in the Americas experienced delays on late Monday afternoon, around 3.30 p.m. Eastern time, but were restored in the early evening at around 6.30 p.m..

Samsung is not looking to make a move on motorola's cell phone operations

SINGAPORE - Samsung Electronics Co. remains optimistic about its handset sales business in 2008 and is not interested in Motorola's mobile unit, a top Samsung executive said Tuesday.

Choi Gee-sung, president of Samsung's telecommunications division, said during an interview with CNBC that Samsung was not interested in acquiring Motorola's handset business because the South Korean company's handset division already has a strong presence in the United States.

"Our market share in the States represents around 20 percent to 25 percent," Choi said. "We don't need to consider acquisition of any others."

Choi also said the company expects strong handset sales in 2008 despite growing fears of an economic slowdown.

Windows Mobile Phone With Sony Ericsson is Almost Here

Sony Ericsson will begin selling its first phone using Windows Mobile software this year, Microsoft is due to announce on Sunday, just ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Until now, Sony Ericsson has primarily used the Symbian operating system to power its smart phones. Its Windows Mobile phone will have a touch screen with a slide-out keyboard and a camera, said Brian Arbogast, vice president of mobile services at Microsoft.

While Apple's iPhone has spurred wider interest in touch-screen phones, Sony Ericsson has been selling touch-screen phones for years. It uses the UIQ user interface on its Symbian phones. UIQ competes with Series 60, the user interface Nokia developed to run on its Symbian phones.

Wireless fair in Germany set to stage mobile Web battle

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Cell phone makers, telecoms carriers and Internet groups are squaring up for a fight for dominance of the mobile Internet, finally ready for market after years of promises and hundreds of billions in investments.

Wireless broadband is coming of age, making rivals of companies such as Nokia Oyj, Google Inc, Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc, who previously could afford to coexist relatively peacefully.

Mobile networks are now capable of delivering the Internet as smoothly to a mobile phone as to a PC, with the clunky handsets, stuttering downloads and network jams of the recent past almost forgotten in many developed markets.

United Nations Reports: The Digital divide is widening between poor and rich countries

GENEVA (AFP) - The "digital divide" between rich and poor countries is growing with developing countries still far behind in the use of broadband internet, the UN trade and development agency has warned.

Developed countries are expected to reach a broadband penetration rate of 28 percent in 2008, while developing countries languish on just 3.0 percent, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in a report issued late Wednesday.

"The diffusion of information and communications technology (ICT) in developing countries is growing but ... such countries lag far behind the industrialised world in the application of ICT and its use by businesses," UNCTAD said in its "Information Economy Report 2007-2008."

The gap has widened for broadband "due to the fast pace of technological development" and associated high costs, UNCTAD official Anh-Nga Tran-Nguyen said.

UNCTAD has already highlighted broadband as a vital tool in economic development, saying last November that it is so vital for businesses that it should be considered a utility comparable to water and electricity.
