Some 58 percent of men and 48 percent of women panic when they hit a problem with their cellphone, while nine percent of people feel stressed when they turn their mobiles off, it said.
Pollsters YouGov, commissioned by the Post Office, questioned 2,163 people online earlier this month.

AT&T CEO says hard to find skilled U.S. workers
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - The head of the top U.S. phone company AT&T Inc (T.N) said on Wednesday it was having trouble finding enough skilled workers to fill all the 5,000 customer service jobs it promised to return to the United States from India.
"We're having trouble finding the numbers that we need with the skills that are required to do these jobs," AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson told a business group in San Antonio, where the company's headquarters is located.
So far, only around 1,400 jobs have been returned to the United States of 5,000, a target it set in 2006, the company said, adding that it maintains the target.

Motorola to split into two companies
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Motorola Inc (MOT.N) said on Wednesday it would split into two publicly traded entities to separate its loss-making handset division from its other businesses, sending its shares up about 5 percent. The move, which comes amid an intensifying proxy battle against activist investor Carl Icahn ahead of a May 5 annual meeting, could be a prelude for a joint venture for the cell phone business, analysts said.
They said separating the cell phone business, which has been losing market share to rivals like Nokia (NOK1V.HE) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), could help Motorola find a strategic investor, such as among Asian handset makers that are keen to win a bigger share of the U.S. market.

Turn a Smart Phone into a Wi-Fi Hot Spot
Got a 3G smartphone with Wi-Fi? Then you might be soon be able to use it as a Wi-Fi hotspot for connecting your notebook or any other Wi-Fi enabled device to the Internet.
North Carolina-based TapRoot Systems today announced its WalkingHotSpot software, designed to effectively turn a Wi-Fi- and mobile broadband-enabled handset into a Wi-Fi router. At launch, WalkingHotSpot will be available only for Windows Mobile or Symbian Series 60 smartphones. TapRoot CEO Bob Bicksler said.
A free demo version will be available for individuals to download from TapRoot's Web site, Bicksler said. However, the demo will only support one Wi-Fi connection at a time.
TapRoot ultimately hopes to sell the full-featured product (which supports multiple simultaneous Wi-Fi connections) to carriers, who would be able to offer it to their customers, probably as a paid service. TapRoot does not plan to sell directly to consumers.
Ease of Wi-Fi
Many 3G cell phones--phones that support mobile broadband for data services--can already be used as notebook modems, either via Bluetooth or cable connections. But setup of these connections can be a hassle--Wi-Fi connections are usually fairly easy to set up.
Bicksler says WalkingHotSpot will support any flavor of mobile broadband. However only phones based on HSDPA/UMTS (AT&T Wireless' high-speed service) will be able to support WalkingHotSpot Wi-Fi service and voice calls simultaneously.
Those based on EVDO (the mobile broadband technology used by Sprint and Verizon Wireless) cannot handle voice and data connections at the same time. If a call came in while you were downloading a file through a WalkingHotSpot Wi-Fi connection, the download would be interrupted. However this is a limitation of EVDO technology, so the same would hold true for use of these phones as modems via Bluetooth or a cable.

Touch-Screen Cell Phono by Samsung Answer to the Apple iphone and LG Prada
The Anycall Haptic by Samsung looks like a thinner version of Apple's iPhone, but adds a new dimension to the touch interface. The phone, launched in South Korea on Tuesday, has a large touch-screen display that also provides haptic feedback, information transmitted via the sense of touch, when using certain functions on the device. It means, for example, that when the volume of the radio is changed, the phone simulates both the sound and feel of the "clicks" on an old-style volume knob on a real radio, said Samsung.
There are 22 kinds of vibration in total built into the phone.
The Anycall Haptic (model numbers SCH-W420 and SPH-W4200) phone has a 3.2-inch widescreen display, a 2-megapixel digital camera, full Internet browser, Bluetooth 2.0 and terrestrial digital TV reception.
It will cost between 700,000 won and 800,000 won (US$700 to $800) in South Korea. There's no word from Samsung on when it might be available elsewhere.
It's the second new handset launched on Tuesday in South Korea that plays on the sense of touch but the other, LG Electronics' LG-SH240, isn't quite as high-tech. The latter phone has a layer of silicon over the front of the phone to give it a little elasticity and make it feel to users like they're touching human skin. It will cost around 400,000 won.

Losing the battle for wireless may be Google win
SAN FRANCISCO - Losing the battle for a prized piece of the airwaves isn't necessarily a setback for Google Inc.
If anything, Thursday's news that Verizon Wireless had won the government-run auction for a pivotal swath of spectrum may even have been the ideal outcome for Google.
That's because investors no longer have to fret about Google straying from its main business of Internet search to spend more than $10 billion buying and building a wireless network.
Yet Google still positioned itself to profit from the newly available airwaves by ensuring the bids for the so-called "C block" escalated to $4.6 billion. Reaching that price triggered a provision that requires the new wireless network to accommodate all mobile devices, including equipment using a software package called "Android" that is supposed to give Google a better opportunity to sell more advertising.

Adobe Says Apple's SDK Blocks Flash on iPhone
Flash on Apple's iPhone has been on and off several times in the last few weeks. On Wednesday, Adobe Systems dampened expectations following a report that it would build a Flash player for the smartphone.
The report, first cited in The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, said Adobe had begun work on a Flash player for the iPhone. The Journal cited remarks by Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen, who reportedly made the comments during a conference call with investors. He said Apple's recent release of a software developers kit (SDK) gave his company the tools it needed to create a media player for the popular iPhone.

How mobile got its game on
Ask anyone to name a mobile phone game and the most common response will be Snake or Tetris.
And while the classic Russian puzzler is the world's most played and downloaded mobile game it is not an accurate reflection of the industry.
At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week the leaders in the mobile game industry have been preaching optimism about the future.
"This is still an infant industry, but it is growing quickly and expanding fast," said Rob Tercek, chairman of GDC Mobile.
"We are looking at an industry that is a $5bn (£2.5bn) industry overall, not bad for one that didn't exist 10 years ago," he said.

European Union picks mobile TV standard
BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union on Monday chose a mobile TV broadcast standard and suggested that its member governments now ask cell carriers to favor it. EU commissioners chose DVB-H, or Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds, the most widely used mobile TV format in Europe, over rival standards such as Qualcomm Inc.'s MediaFLO and another known as DMB that is favored by Chinese and South Korean manufacturers.
DVB-H is supported by the world's largest handset maker, Nokia, as well as Motorola, Philips, Sagem, Sony, Ericsson, Samsung and major European cell phone operators Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile. By contrast, Qualcomm's technology has signed up the two biggest players in the United States — Verizon Wireless and AT&T.

India says not considering banning BlackBerry
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India is not considering banning Research In Motion's (RIM.TO) (RIMM.O) BlackBerry services at this point of time, the top official in the telecoms ministry said on Friday.
Security agencies have raised concerns the service posed a risk as emails sent using it could not be traced or intercepted.
"There is no question of banning at this point," Telecoms Secretary Siddhartha Behura told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference.
"We are not interested that we say BlackBerry will not used in this country," he said, adding the telecoms department was "very keen" the services should continue.

Nokia, techs drop as TI points to 3G weakness
HELSINKI (Reuters) - Shares in the world's top cell phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE) and several other European technology firms fell on Tuesday after Texas Instruments (TXN.N) cut its first-quarter forecasts, citing a weaker 3G market.
Fears that the weakening global economy is biting into consumers' appetite for pricier cell phones sent Nokia shares down 6.6 percent to 20.07 euros ($31.06) by 6:38 a.m. EDT, helping pull the DJ Stoxx European technology index (.SX8P) down 3.1 percent.
"In our view the replacement cycle will slow due to the economy and consumers will increasingly go for cheaper phones over more pricier models," said Carnegie analyst Janne Rantanen.

German state seeks $92M from Nokia
BERLIN - A German state has asked Nokia Corp. to return subsidies — with interest, for a total of nearly $92 million — that it got to build a cell phone factory it now plans to close.
Finland-based Nokia, the world's top cell phone maker, announced in January that it plans to close its manufacturing plant in Bochum, in the industrial Ruhr region — a move that likely will result in the loss of 2,300 jobs.
German unions and politicians are infuriated at the decision. The state government in North Rhine-Westphalia said last month it was demanding Nokia repay some $63 million in subsidies paid in 1998 and 1999.

American net users getting Mobile: study

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - A comScore study released Tuesday shows US mobile Internet use is rising exponentially as people increasingly opt to be online while on the move.
The number of people using broadband mobile Internet connections jumped to 2.16 million in the final three months of 2007 as compared to 854,000 in the same period a year earlier, according to comScore.
"Though mobile broadband access is currently used by about one percent of the total US Internet population, it is poised for significant growth over the next few years," said comScore senior vice president Serge Matta.
"As consumers increasingly demand and depend on portable Internet access, the demand for mobile broadband should continue to increase."
