Americans Slow at Recycling Gadgets

U.S. consumers still slow to recycle gadgets

Americans Slow at Recycling Gadgets
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Green may be the new black, but many U.S. consumers are not recycling old electronic gadgets despite promises by multiple organizations for hassle-free ways to get rid of electronic waste.

Putting computers, televisions or cell phones in the trash is increasingly frowned on, and states like Massachusetts ban discarding many electronics in garbage cans. As a result, some local authorities arrange free recycling events and companies and charities around the country offer to recycle old devices.

But while most U.S consumers say they approve of recycling, a large number are not actually doing it. Stephen Baker of consumer research firm NPD Group has an idea why.

"People aren't doing it because people are lazy. When it comes right down to it there are no incentives. Most of the time it costs them money and even if it doesn't, the customer has to be proactive," said Baker.

The Federal Communications Commission has called for a Cell Phone alert system

FCC calls for a Cellular alert system

San Francisco - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has moved to set up a system that would send text alerts to people on their cellular phones in case of natural disasters and other emergencies.

With an order released Wednesday, the FCC adopted technical requirements for transmission of the alerts, which would require the cooperation of mobile operators. However, at least one large hurdle remains before the system is launched: No government agency has yet been named to collect and transmit the alerts to Cell Phone Network operators.

The Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) would be designed to reach U.S. residents regardless of whether they have access to a TV, a radio, or electricity. More than 250 million people in the country have Cell phones today, FCC commissioners noted

Samsung boss questined by South Korean Prosecutors

Samsung Exec. in trouble?

The boss of South Korea's Samsung Group has appeared before special prosecutors to be questioned over allegations of corruption at the firm. Lee Kun-hee, chairman of the company, the country's largest conglomerate, is being questioned in regard to an investigation that started in January.

Samsung is accused of operating a 200bn won ($215m; £108m) slush fund to bribe prosecutors, judges and civil servants. The company and Mr Lee continue to deny the accusations.

Samsung is a Giant company

The investigations started after the allegations were made by former Samsung lawyer Kim Yong-Chul. Prosecutors are due to end the investigations on 23 April, with the conclusions expected before the end of the month. Best-known for its electronics unit, Samsung is also one of the world's largest shipbuilders. It also has businesses in the financial, chemical and entertainment industries. With a global workforce of 754,000, it enjoys annual profits of more than $14bn.

Cell Phone Projectors

cell phone movies magnified

VEGAS - Recognizing that it's not much fun to watch movies on a tiny cell phone, a number of companies are racing to develop gadgets that project what's playing on the small screen onto walls, table cloths and other handy surfaces.

"Pico projectors" that are small enough to carry around in a shirt pocket are expected on the market later this year. Eventually, the technology will be tiny enough to be built into phones and portable media players, the companies say.

Microvision Inc., a small Redmond, Wash., company, was at the CTIA Wireless industry show this week to demonstrate a prototype of its projector. It's about the size of two full-size iPods, but by the time it goes on sale later this year, it should be about 30 percent smaller, said Russell Hannigan, the company's director of projector product management.

In a darkened room, the prototype beamed out surprisingly bright, crisp and large video from a connected iPod Nano: With the projector held 6 feet away from the wall, the image measured 6 feet diagonally and was as sharp as a DVD.

Research In Motion (RIM) profits rise suggesting company will do well though American Economic woes.

RIM Reports Higher Profits

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM.TO)(RIMM.O) reported a higher fourth-quarter profit on Wednesday that topped expectations, and delivered a strong outlook that suggested the company is comfortably weathering the slowdown in the U.S. economy.

RIM's shares, which roughly tripled in 2007 but have stagnated since the start of this year, rose 6 percent in after-hours trading as investors reacted to the results, which were also lauded by analysts.

The company said it earned $412.5 million, or 72 cents a share, in the three months ended March 1. That was up from a profit of $187.4 million, or 33 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier.

Cell phone boosters coming for the home

boosters for cell phone

LAS VEGAS - As more and more people drop their landlines, the wireless industry faces a challenge: poor cellular coverage within the home.

To tackle it, they're looking at selling customers boxes that in essence give them cell towers within the home. To put it another way, the devices make their cell phones work like cordless phones, connecting to a home base station.

These so-called femtocells — "femto" is a scientific term for something very small — look much like Wi-Fi routers, which have become a common household appliance.

But are customers ready to bring another electronic box into the house?

Femtocell vendors at the CTIA Wireless industry show in Las Vegas this week say "yes" — because the devices solve a lot of problems for carriers.

Sprint Samsung Instinct like the iphone

Sprint Samsung Instinct

LAS VEGAS - Sprint Nextel Corp. on Tuesday said it is betting heavily on a touch-screen phone that appears to be the closest thing the U.S. market has seen to Apple Inc.'s vaunted iPhone.

The Samsung Instinct will be available in June for a yet undetermined price, Sprint announced at CTIA Wireless, a cell-phone industry trade show in Las Vegas. Executives hinted that the price would be substantially lower than the $399 for the cheapest iPhone.

Sprint, which has been losing subscribers, will spend $150 million to advertise the Instinct when it launches, compared with $30 million for a typical product introduction, according to David Owens, the company's director of devices.
